Hello, friend. We’re a Minnesota-based company that manufactures the highest quality coatings, sealants and adhesives on the market, including Plasti Dip — the original peelable, flexible, insulating, non-slip, durable, rubber coating. We’ve been at it for more than 40 years, which is cool with us, because it means we’re the originator, not an imitator. For industrial applications, practical purposes around the home, or just to make things unique and pretty, its uses are virtually unlimited. Our fans never cease to amaze us with their creative uses, which just inspires us to inspire them right back.
Back in December of 1972, Plasti Dip International began in St. Louis Park, MN, as a small manufacturer of Plastisol products. We made toys (like your childhood pals, Gumby® and Pokey®), handle grips and chain saw scabbards. We call this portion of our history, “back in the day.”
Being the smart fella that he was, Founder and President Robert Haasl soon developed the world’s very first air dry do-it-yourself rubberized coating. Plasti Dip had emerged.
It was just one in a series of innovative products we created that decade. The other awesome things we invented include:
Getting these unique products sold through ACE Hardware®, Sears® and other hardware retailers and distributors put Plasti Dip International on the map. It was a brave, new world.
In the 1980’s Plasti Dip International became known as PDI, and widened its development to include new coatings for DIY, Industrial and Commercial uses. Some of the unique applications included testing on bridges in Minnesota, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, concrete swimming pools for Holiday Inn® Hotels and meat processing plants across the country. Oh yeah, and the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge.
In the mid-80’s, Head of Industrial Sales, Scott Haasl (Robert’s son), pursued a new direction — protective coatings for flexible foams. Only a few short years later, PDI was already recognized as the industry leader in the category. These new coatings protect important stuff like medical positioning pads used for surgery, imaging and wheelchair seating systems, as well as fun stuff like pool floats, wrestling mats and martial arts gear.
Our raddest creations of the 80’s include:
Due to all this growth, we needed to design and build our first special purpose facility in 1987. It was a good problem to have.
Many folks remember the 90’s as the decade when grunge rocked the music world and that thing called the Internet gained widespread use. For us, it’s immortalized as the year we introduced Liquid Tape and Plasti Dip® Jr.
Through all the head-banging and new product development, PDI remained a leader in emission reduction with our green technology.
There was great growth, but also sadness. In 1998 Founder and CEO Robert Haasl passed away and President Scott Haasl took over as President and CEO.
Soon after, Scott along with Sales and Marketing VP, Dan Ruege, developed the new umbrella brand, PERFORMIX, which included a new look for our packaging.
We’re still doing our thing. Pretty much better than ever, too. For one, we designed and built a high-efficiency facility to house all operations in one handy-dandy location.
In other news, our industrial distribution continues to thrive with the introduction of new products and partnerships. Here are some of our most recent, super-neat products:
Nowadays, our passionate, rapidly-expanding fan base is using Plasti Dip in creative new ways. We affectionately refer to them as Dipheads, and their handy work is all over Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and other social media. From hardware to arts and crafts and even entire vehicles, the possibilities are endless. Endless!
Through it all, exceeding environmental and safety standards continues to be priority numero uno. We love the world. Everyone should. It’s where we live.
The combination of new markets and a focus on low environmental impact continue to put Plasti Dip at the front of the industry. And just like the owner of a freshly-dipped car, we couldn’t be more proud.
